The UK Fleet Industry can be divided into three broad sectors. Here is some more information about them.
Rental companies provide cars and vans on short term hire, for as little as an hour or as much as a month. Offering a flexible, fixed-cost and 'pay-as-you-go' approach to motoring, it is very popular with holidaymakers, business travellers and non-car owners who have an occasional use for road transport. In excess of 250,000 vehicles are rented in the UK, with approximately 10 million rental transactions a year.
Leasing companies provide longer term vehicle hire with an agreed mileage limit, typically for a period of 12, 24 or 36 months. The contract often includes some sort of maintenance and breakdown cover. The dominant form of lease is contract hire, which has more than 50% of the market. In excess of 1.9 million vehicles operate on contract hire currently in the UK.
The commercial vehicle market provides trucks, trailers and vans on a short and long-term basis, either through rental or a leasing contract. They operate mainly on a business-to-business basis and currently run in excess of 450,000 vehicles.
Is the management of a company's vehicle fleet. Fleet management includes commercial motor vehicles such as cars, vans and trucks. Fleet (vehicle) management can include a range of functions, such as vehicle financing, vehicle maintenance, vehicle telematics (tracking and diagnostics), driver management, fuel management and health & safety management.
The most basic function in all fleet management systems, is the vehicle tracking component. This component is usually GPS based.
Advanced fleet management systems can connect to the vehicle's on board computer and gather data for the user. Details such as mileage and fuel consumption are gathered into a global statistics scheme.
By combining received data from the Vehicle Tracking system and the onboard computer, it is possible to form a profile for any given driver.
Fleet management software enables people to accomplish a series of specific tasks in the management of any or all aspects relating to a company's fleet of vehicles. These specific tasks encompass all operations from vehicle acquisition to disposal. Software, depending on its capabilities, allows functions such as driver/vehicle profiling, trip profiling, dispatch, vehicle efficiency, etc.
